Apple has acquired Swiss visual effects startup Faceshift, which played a key role in creating the new Star Wars film. The acquisition was revealed in a statement to TechCrunch, and comes not long after the tech giant purchased both augmented reality firm Mataio, facial recognition company Polar Rose, and 3D scanning house PrimeSense.
The company in question this time around is Faceshift, a Zurich based visual effects firm which specialises in real time, markerless motion capture, aiming to capture realistic facial expressions, as is to be displayed in the upcoming Star Wars film The Force Awakens, due for a worldwide December 18 release. As always, Apple is quite secretive about their intentions with the purchase, reciting the same standard line as always when asked – “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
